The game pauses, and you consult the 'Traitor's Tome' and the 'Secrets of Survival' book to determine the scenario, the traitor's goals, and the heroes' objectives. The haunt often dramatically changes the game rules and win conditions.

Each explorer has a Speed stat that determines how many movement points they have each turn. You spend movement points to move between adjacent rooms. Some room tiles may restrict movement.

There are three types of cards: Items (grant special abilities or bonuses), Omens (often trigger haunt rolls), and Events (cause immediate effects).

During the exploration phase, certain Omen cards require a 'Haunt Roll'. If the roll fails to meet a certain number based on the current Omen and the number of omens collected so far, the haunt begins. The player who triggered the haunt and the explorer who triggered the omen are often, but not always, the traitor and the person betrayed, respectively.
